Sonne Daycarecenter 4 - construction officially started!
We are excited to announce, that construction for our new bamboo school is on the way!
On 15 August 2026, something new began in Ward 60, Dagon Seikkan, Yangon.
Construction of DCC 4 — SONNE's fourth Daycare Center — has officially started.
DCC stands for Daycare Center. SONNE currently runs three centres in the Dagon Seikkan and South Dagon area, providing safe spaces, Non-Formal Education, free tuition, nutritious meals, healthcare and support for children from some of Yangon's most disadvantaged communities.
Now, DCC 4 is coming to Ward 60.
WHY HERE?
Ward 60 is a large settlement where hundreds of families are living in extremely difficult circumstances.
There is a government school in the wider area, but for many families, having a school nearby does not mean having realistic access to education.
Uniforms, books and school materials cost money. Some children lack the documentation needed for enrolment. And when a family is struggling simply to put food on the table, education can quickly become a luxury.
Many children therefore stay out of school. Some work to help their families. Others have to look after younger brothers and sisters while their parents work.
Our SONNE social workers have been visiting families in this community for some time. We already support children from the wider area, and it became clear that many more children needed a place to learn.
So we decided to bring the school closer to them.
A NEW SAFE SPACE
DCC 4 will provide space for around 40 children in our Non-Formal Education programme and around 20 children in our Free Tuition Classes.
Our teachers have already visited families and identified around 50 potential NFE students between the ages of six and twelve.
But DCC 4 will be more than classrooms.
It will be a place where children can learn, receive nutritious food and basic healthcare, meet other children and simply have a few hours every day when they can be children.
AND NOW THE BUILDING BEGINS
The school will be built using bamboo, together with our friends at Blue Temple.
The concept is designed for Myanmar's climate, using local materials and local workers to create a practical, naturally ventilated and adaptable school building.
We'll tell you much more about why bamboo, who is building DCC 4 and how the construction works in the coming weeks.
For now, this is Day One.
The site has been cleared.
The first measurements have been taken.
The building has been marked out.
And the first groundwork has begun.
Soon, the bamboo will arrive.
Then the structure will start to rise.
And step by step, this empty piece of land will become DCC 4.
A school.
A safe space.
A new opportunity for children in Ward 60.
THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING
Over the coming weeks, we'll take you along as DCC 4 takes shape — from the first foundations to the first day the children walk through its doors.
Follow the journey with us.
