Free Tuition Classes

Helping children succeed in government schools

For many children in Myanmar, attending a government school is only the beginning. Large classes and limited teaching resources often mean that students receive little individual attention and struggle to keep up with the curriculum.

Private tuition classes are therefore extremely common.

But for families living in poverty, paying for additional lessons is simply not an option.

SONNE Social Organization provides free tuition classes at all three of our daycare centers,

giving children the additional support they need to succeed in school.

Supporting children who need it most

Our tuition classes serve around 120 children in total, with approximately 40 students at each center.

Around half are children who previously attended our Non-Formal Education programme and have since transitioned into government schools. The other half are children who attend government schools but have never been part of our NFE programme and whose families cannot afford private tuition.

The classes generally support children from approximately Grade 3 to Grade 7 or 8, depending on the center and the needs of the students.

Building stronger foundations

Each center offers three tuition classes every day, with each class lasting around 90 minutes.

The children receive additional support in:

  • Mathematics

  • English

  • Myanmar

  • Science

The aim is not simply to help children pass their exams. We want them to understand what they are learning, build confidence and develop the foundations they need for their continued education.

And the results are particularly encouraging.

Our students regularly rank among the best-performing students in their classes at government school. For children who often come from families with very limited educational opportunities, this is a remarkable achievement.

Education should not depend on what a family can afford

Free tuition is an important part of SONNE's approach to education.

Our Non-Formal Education programme helps children who have been excluded from school to build the foundations they need to enter or continue their education. Our tuition classes then help children who are already attending government school to stay on track and reach their full potential.

Together, these programmes help ensure that poverty does not become a permanent barrier to education.

Every child deserves the chance to learn, succeed and build a better future — regardless of their family's income.
